This is the oldest of the world‘s zodiacs. It follows a cycle of twelve years. The lunar (Chinese) calendar is found throughout the Orient and is followed by a greater number of people than any other. It is observed in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and neighboring countries. The legend is that Buddha invited all of the animals to his birthday party. The twelve who came were each rewarded with a year with the promise that they would be the animals to hide in the heart of the year itself and also within the hearts of those born during that year. The Horse is the seventh of the twelve animals Buddha rewarded with stewardship of a year. Five Elements (Fire, Water, Metal, Earth and wood) distinguish the animals. Every sixty years the pattern of element-animal pairs repeats.
