Sabian Symbols

Long ago Saba was a part of the ancient nation of Mesopotamia in the Holy Land, located near present day Yemen. The Sabian people who once lived there, are nearly forgotten now. Their faith was a revealed religion, classified by today’s theologians with Zoroastrianism. The general area is also sacred to the three modern day faiths of Abraham: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Astrology’s earliest traditions can be traced to that part of the world. It is home to one of the oldest zodiacs, located in an archaeological site in nearby Dendera, Egypt.

The mysterious history of Saba and its proximity to sacred and spiritual places appealed to Marc Edmund Jones, a gifted young 20th Century astrologer from California. It inspired his choice of a name for a system of astrology he developed called The Sabian Symbols. The 360 Sabian Symbols are unique and separate images depicting each degree of the zodiac. Like the faith of the original Sabians, the symbols were to be revealed through a visionary experience.

The Sabian Symbols are unique and individual. Although there can be a general meaning derived from each symbol (degree), it is also best to interpret them from a subjective point of view – the theory being that the reader of the chart will have additional insight to the subject by way of the rest of the natal chart.

Attempt interpretation with your own chart first, then look at the charts of your friends and families. Note any similarities to planets in the same degree of the same sign between different individuals.
