Few images conjure up the idea of Witchcraft more effectively than magic words written in magic ink made from magic plants, but for all their mystique, bat’s blood and iron gall are not accessible (or even necessarily desirable) to the modern practitioner. In Grimoire of Magical Inks, Noémie Myara provides the reader with simple recipes and instructions, relying on typically available ingredients rather than the questionable and sometimes dangerous components and methods from grimoires. In addition to components with a naturally occurring pigment, she also includes tables of ingredients that can be burnt into ash to contribute magically to the ink’s intended purpose. This allows the reader to readily craft their own magical inks, tailored to their specific magical goals.

Printed in full color on glossy pages, the text is divided into four sections. The first introduces the reader to the history and uses of magical inks, while the second provides the master recipes and instructions for creating black, red, brown, violet and blue inks. These form the bases that other, more magically tailored recipes build upon. The third section of the book instructs the reader in the deployment of these inks for magic, including information about the magical symbolism of color, guidance for ritually consecrating ink and recipes for additional magical blends to approximate traditional recipes. The fourth and final section outlines spells and rituals to employ magical inks alone or in combination with salt for protection, divination, luck, love, beauty and other purposes. Taken together, these offer the reader a straightforward and modern  introduction with easy to follow recipes that open the door to an ancient world of spellcraft based on magical inks.
