Gypsies



“Gypsy, one scattered race, like stars in the sight of God.” Gypsies evoke images of freedom, bright colors, wild music and dancing, the allure of being “away with the raggle taggle gypsies-o,” an apt description of a people with neither written language nor written history. Gypsies are known to themselves as Roma, although the term “gypsy” comes from the incorrect assumption that they originated in Egypt. In fact the first such wanderers came from northwestern India
Gypsies
and today about 15 million gypsies can be found in virtually every country. In 1933 a flag was created to unite the Roma worldwide. It was designed with blue on the top half symbolizing the sky and God, and green on the bottom half, representing a connection to the Earth Mother. In 1971 an additional symbol, a red 16-spoke chakra wheel was included in the center to identify the Roma as originating in India.
