Osun
Cowries

The world over, when we encounter water, we encounter the embodiment of the feminine, of purification and of fertility. Water sustains our fragile lives in the wombs of our mothers before we come to each incarnation.

Water is the agent by which we cleanse both the body and the soul.

In many traditions the archetype of a feminine deity reflects the holiness of water. In the Yoruba cultures of West Africa, the primordial importance of water is acknowledged and venerated through worship of Osun, the riverine orisa, or “deity.” She is the owner of all rivers and all the sweet waters of the world, including water in the bloodstream and elsewhere in the body.
